WHY IS PHIL COLLINS STILL RELEVANT?

The article ‘Ten reason why Phil Collins shouldn’t retire

from Virgin Media is a list of contemporary artists who are inspired by his work. R&B and rap artists like Kanye West and Joe and Brandy have listed him as a big inspiration. Indie artists Yeasayer, Sleigh Bells and The Postal Service also love him. Drummers Julian Casablancas and the band Neon Indian are heavily influenced by his drumming style. The explosive drum fill at the end of the song In the air tonight’ is (according to many) one of the most memorable drum parts in history. Most importantly he is still relevant because there is a huge fan base that has appreciated his music for decades. Personally, I’ve been addicted to his music ever since I heard the greatest hits album when I was eight years old. I admire the way he creates atmosphere and tells stories; his ballads about heartbreak in particular never get old and always seem to touch me. Collins should inspire the younger generation of artists to keep reinventing yourself: his latest Motown inspired album ‘Going Back’ proves Collins is still experimenting and doesn’t like to repeat the same old sounds. Throughout his career he experimented with jazz, big band and classical music. If you didn’t like what you’ve heard so far from Collins in this article or on the radio, do realize this was probably only five percent of his discography. There are a lot of less known gems to discover! You might just find the Phil Collins style you can appreciate.
