This criticism isn’t new at all: after 1975 the drummer became the lead singer of the progressive-rock band Genesis after front man Peter Gabriel’s departure. Prog-rock is a rock music sub genre that originated in the United Kingdom in the 60s and 70s.The genre is known for the mixture of rock with composition techniques and instrumentation from jazz and classical music. A lot of fans didn’t appreciate the new soft-rock and pop sound of the band after Phil became the lead singer  (‘In too deep’ & ‘Hold on my heart’). In 1981 the singer recorded his first solo album ‘Face Value’ with the hit single ‘In the air tonight’. Radio stations couldn’t get enough of his sentimental pop ballads (‘Against all odds’ & ‘I wish it would rain down’) and it became almost impossible for the listeners to escape his music. In 1985 Phil Collins recorded one of the most hated songs in his oeuvre called ‘Sussudio’; the happy horns, Ping-Pong sounding drum-machine and synthesizer-overload in this song, reminiscent of music for an 80s aerobics routine, drove a lot of people crazy. The word ‘Sussudio’ is a mystery to many; the imaginary girl’s name was inspired by a guy who worked at the recording studio. He had a hard time pronouncing the word studio and stuttered stu-stu-studio. The title doesn’t really make sense and the 80s synthesizer sounds didn’t age well, but the “Ooooh’s” and the “Su-su-suddio’s” are still catchy to sing along with.
