THREE SONGS YOU NEED TO HEAR

2 MAN ON THE CORNER

‘Man on the corner’ (1981) from the Genesis album ‘Abacab’ is a great example of how to create atmosphere and how to tell a story. Just like In the air tonight’ the song starts very basic with a drum machine and synthesizers. Phil first explains what’s going on and introduces a homeless character. “Nobody knows him, And nobody cares, 'Cos there's no hiding place, There's no hiding place - for you and me.” The drums kick in and the higher, emotional background vocals enforce the mystery and danger even more. Distorted synthesizer sounds add to the weirdness of it all. Other songs by Collins about being homeless are Homeless’ and the final version, the hit single Another day in paradise (1989).
