3 IT’S GONNA GET BETTER​

The message of ‘It’s gonna get better’ (1983) from the album ‘Genesis’ is very hopeful. The lyrics are about feeling lonely in a city filled with danger. Collins explains that we need to listen more to each other. The song starts with an atmospheric synthesizer motif that keeps repeating throughout the song. The reversed and unpredictable keyboard sounds create a moody undertone. Phil sings with a low voice about the bad things that are happening: “In the darkness you feel the sharpness of steel.” followed by a striking drum-machine sound. There are more uplifting parts where Collins sings with a high soft tone. The jumpy heavy bass-line makes the song cheerful, but serious. The song ends with a loud voice from Collins encouraging us to really start working on this change and to start listening to each other.
